THIS IS NOT YOUR GRANDMOTHER’S GAME OF SCRABBLE
Chronicling the daily lives of four top players in the United States, "Word Wars" is a gritty, warts-and-all documentary on the competitive Scrabble scene. This full-length feature film was listed in the Official Selection at the Sundance Film Festival 2004, one of the world’s most prestigious cinematic events, and was subsequently nominated for an Emmy Award in 2005.
The filmmakers weave various elements of Scrabble subculture into the main story, from the $25,000 first prize on offer at the National Championship to the ‘parkies’ of Washington Square, NY who bet on every game but never play tournaments. Humorous, intense and touching in equal measure, the pace is relentless.
One need not play the game, or even own a board, to enjoy this film.
Contains adult language. Running time: 85 mins.
